BonAzox 250 SC: protecting soybean against rust

Soybean rust can strip plants of their leaves within weeks during pod filling. Azoxystrobin-based BonAzox 250 SC protects second-season soybean from flowering onwards.

Rust starts as small tan to reddish-brown lesions on the underside of the lower leaves, which turn yellow and fall early. Losses are highest when the disease builds up between flowering and pod filling, in warm and humid weather.

Check the lower leaves regularly from flowering. Spray preventively at flowering in high-risk areas, or at the first pustules elsewhere, and repeat after 14 to 21 days if needed. BonAzox 250 SC belongs to FRAC group 11: alternate it with a fungicide from another group, such as tebuconazole-based BonTebu 250 EW, and grow tolerant varieties where they are available.

BonAzox 250 SC is available from our network in Uganda. Always read the label before use.

Season

Second season: keeping banana plantations productive

With the return of the rains, it is time to protect banana roots against nematodes and keep black Sigatoka in check, while staying alert to banana Xanthomonas wilt.

Nematodes destroy the roots and corms, causing small bunches and toppled plants. At the start of the rainy season, BonFosthia 10 GR can be spread in a ring around the mats and lightly covered with soil. For new plantings, use pared, healthy suckers or clean planting material, with BonNema Bio WP mixed with organic matter in the planting hole.

Black Sigatoka spreads in wet weather. Remove and chop leaves with necrotic streaks at regular intervals; where disease pressure justifies a fungicide, use BonTebu 250 EW in strict rotation with products from other groups, as the label specifies.

Banana Xanthomonas wilt has no chemical cure: remove the male bud with a forked stick once the last hand has formed, disinfect cutting tools between plants, and cut down and bury infected plants. Our advisers can help you plan the season.

Practical sessions on safe use for farmer groups and agro-dealers

BonAgro Uganda offers hands-on sessions on reading the label, protective equipment, sprayer calibration and empty container management.

Accurate spraying protects the crop, the operator and the environment. Our sessions take place in the field or at the premises of farmer groups and cooperatives, with practical demonstrations: reading the label, choosing and wearing protective equipment and preparing the spray mix correctly.

Participants calibrate a knapsack sprayer, practise triple rinsing and learn how to store products safely at home and in shops, away from children, food and animal feed. Sessions for agro-dealers also cover diagnosis, so that they can guide farmers to the right product and rate.

Farmer groups, cooperatives and agro-dealers who would like to host a session can contact us through the online form, giving their location and main crops.

Advice

Coffee berry borer: clean harvesting first, then well-timed sprays

The coffee berry borer breeds inside the berries and can spoil a large share of the crop. Good field hygiene is the basis of control; sprays only work when they are well timed.

The female beetle bores into green berries and lays her eggs inside; the larvae feed on the beans, which lose weight and quality. Berries left on the trees or on the ground after harvest carry the pest from one season to the next.

Pick all ripe, overripe and dry berries at every round and at the end of the harvest, collect fallen berries and destroy infested ones; traps help to follow the beetle flights. When 2–5% of berries are bored during the flight period, about three to four months after the main flowering, a targeted spray protects the developing crop.

BonLambda 25 EC (lambda-cyhalothrin) is available from our network in Uganda for this use. Spray outside bee foraging hours, keep a buffer zone from water bodies and always read the label before use.

Advice

First-season maize: scout for fall armyworm from emergence

Fall armyworm does the most damage on young maize. Scouting from emergence lets you act while the larvae are small and easiest to control.

Young larvae feed inside the whorl, leaving translucent windows on the leaves, then ragged holes and sawdust-like frass. Walk the field twice a week from emergence and check plants at random in several parts of the field.

When fresh whorl damage reaches the action threshold recommended by extension services, spray late in the day and direct the spray into the whorl. BonEma 19 EC (emamectin benzoate, IRAC group 6) and BonChloran 200 SC (chlorantraniliprole, IRAC group 28) both control young larvae.

Alternate the two groups between sprays and seasons to delay resistance, and combine chemical control with timely planting, regular weeding and the destruction of crop residues.

Season

First season: clean land preparation before the rains

Controlling couch grass and other weeds before planting gives first-season crops a clean start. Spray timing and water quality make all the difference.

Couch grass (Digitaria scalarum) and other perennial weeds regrow from underground rhizomes, so hoeing alone tends to spread them. Glyphosate moves from the leaves down to the rhizomes, but only when it is sprayed on green, actively growing weeds: wait for regrowth after the first showers rather than spraying dry or freshly slashed vegetation.

Use clean water — muddy water reduces efficacy — and a flat-fan nozzle at steady pressure. Respect the rain-free period on the label and wait about a week before ploughing, so that the product reaches the rhizomes. Dense couch grass may need a second spray on the regrowth.

BonGlypho 480 SL is available from our network in Uganda for pre-plant land clearing and for directed weed control in coffee and banana plantations. Always read the label before use.

Always read the label before use. Product information is given for guidance only; the label of the product authorised in your country always prevails.
